Description

A 1900 oil portrait of American socialite Elizabeth Sherman Cameron by Swedish artist Anders Zorn. It features Zorn's signature loose brushwork and a bold colour scheme of red, yellow, and cream hues.

Anders Zorn painted this portrait of Elizabeth Sherman Cameron in 1900. Cameron was a prominent figure in Washington DC society and a close confidante of the historian Henry Adams. The work demonstrates Zorn's mastery of oil paint through his characteristic loose brushwork and limited palette. He often restricted his colours to yellow ochre, vermilion, ivory black, and white, yet achieved a wide range of tones and textures. The composition places Cameron on a bold red sofa. She wears a pale, floral-patterned evening gown that reflects the light. Her posture is relaxed but formal, with one arm resting along the back of the sofa and the other holding a yellow fan. The background features a yellow wall decorated with a flowering branch, suggesting the influence of Japonisme which was popular in Western art during the late nineteenth century. Zorn's technique focuses on the play of light across different surfaces. The silk of the dress is rendered with broad, confident strokes that suggest movement and sheen without over-detailing the fabric. The contrast between the warm yellow background and the cool whites of the dress creates a balanced visual field. This portrait is a representative example of the international style of society portraiture practised by Zorn and his contemporaries such as John Singer Sargent or Giovanni Boldini. The artist captures the sitter's expression with directness. Unlike more traditional, stiff portraits, Zorn's approach feels immediate. The application of paint is thick in areas of light and thinner in the shadows, a method that gives the surface a tactile quality. The relationship between the artist and the sitter is evident in the candid nature of the pose. Elizabeth Sherman Cameron was known for her intelligence and social influence, qualities that Zorn conveys through her steady gaze. The use of the fan as a prop adds a diagonal element to the lower left of the frame, balancing the dark, angular branch in the upper right. Zorn's ability to suggest complex forms with minimal strokes is a hallmark of his mature style. The folds of the skirt are defined by the direction of the brush and the thickness of the pigment rather than meticulous drawing. This economy of means allows the viewer to focus on the overall atmosphere of the scene. The red of the sofa provides a strong horizontal anchor for the verticality of the sitter, grounding the composition within the interior space.

Anders Zorn portrait

Artist Biography

Anders Zorn

Zorn painted three sitting American presidents: Grover Cleveland, William Howard Taft and Theodore Roosevelt. For a Swedish painter from a small town in Dalarna, the commissions represented an extraordinary international reach, built on a reputation as one of the finest portrait painters and etchers of his generation.

He was born in Mora in 1860, studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm, and worked across Paris, London and the United States. His ability to render water and flesh with loose, confident brushwork set him apart from more academic contemporaries. His etchings, numbering roughly three hundred, are considered among the finest of the period.

He returned to Mora later in life, establishing a museum and open-air museum there. The Zorn Museum remains a major cultural institution in Sweden. He died in Mora in 1920, at sixty.
