A contemplative portrait of the artist's daughter, Ekaterina Nesterova, depicted in her Red Cross nurse uniform during the First World War.
Mikhail Nesterov, a central figure in Russian Symbolism, produced this portrait of his daughter, Ekaterina, during the early years of the First World War. The composition captures her in the uniform of a Red Cross nurse, a role many women of her social standing adopted during the conflict. Nesterov focuses on the stark contrast between the clinical white of the headscarf and the muted, shadowy tones of the background. The paint application is deliberate, with visible brushwork that gives the fabric a tactile quality.
Unlike his more expansive religious or allegorical works, this portrait is intimate and restrained. The subject is depicted in profile, her gaze directed away from the viewer, which lends the image a contemplative, almost detached quality. The red cross emblem on her bag provides the only break in the otherwise monochromatic palette, drawing the eye to the specific details of her service. Nesterov avoids unnecessary ornamentation, preferring to let the simple lines of the nurse's habit define the form.
This work reflects the artist's ability to imbue a portrait with a sense of quiet gravity. While the subject is clearly identified, the painting functions as a study of duty and stoicism. The background, rendered in dark, indistinct washes, pushes the figure forward, ensuring that the viewer remains focused on the silhouette of the nurse. It is a characteristic example of Nesterov's later period, where he moved away from the complex narrative structures of his earlier religious paintings toward a more direct, psychological approach to portraiture. The work remains a quiet document of a specific historical moment, captured through the lens of a father observing his daughter's participation in the war effort.
