A detailed seventeenth-century portrait engraving of the painter Cornelis Saftleven, executed by the master engraver Lucas Vorsterman I after Anthony van Dyck.
This portrait of the Dutch painter Cornelis Saftleven is a fine example of the collaborative printmaking culture in the seventeenth century. The work originates from the Iconography, a collection of portraits of famous contemporaries initiated by Anthony van Dyck. Lucas Vorsterman I, a master engraver, translated Van Dyck's original painted study into this precise print.
Vorsterman employs a sophisticated range of line work to define the textures of the subject. The sitter is depicted in a three-quarter view, wearing a ruff and a doublet. His hand rests upon a creature, a detail that alludes to Saftleven's reputation for painting nocturnal scenes and fantastical subjects. The engraving technique allows for a subtle modulation of light across the face and clothing, creating a sense of volume and presence. The background is kept relatively neutral, ensuring the focus remains on the character of the sitter.
As a printmaker, Vorsterman was known for his ability to capture the psychological depth of his subjects while maintaining the technical rigour required by the medium. The inscription at the base identifies the subject as a painter of nocturnal phantasms, providing a direct link to his artistic output. This print is a record of the professional network surrounding Van Dyck and the high standard of reproductive engraving during the Baroque period. The composition is balanced, with the sitter's gaze directed towards the viewer, establishing a direct connection that transcends the centuries. The print remains a significant document for those interested in the history of portraiture and the technical evolution of European printmaking.
