An eighteenth-century engraving of the Dutch artist Cornelis Pronk, featuring the subject with his drawing tools and a formal biographical inscription.
This engraving depicts the Dutch artist Cornelis Pronk, a figure known for his topographical drawings and portraiture during the eighteenth century. The composition presents the artist within a trompe l'oeil frame, a common device in period portrait prints. Pronk is shown wearing a tricorn hat and a cravat, his expression composed and direct. Before him, resting on the ledge of the frame, are drawing implements and a portfolio of sketches, which identify his profession as a draughtsman and painter of life studies.
The print includes a formal inscription beneath the portrait, detailing his identity as a skilled portrait painter and an excellent draughtsman of views from life. It also records his birth in Amsterdam in 1691 and his death in 1759. The work was executed by C. van Noorde in 1759, based on an earlier self-portrait by Pronk dated 1735. The technique employs fine cross-hatching and stippling to create tonal depth, characteristic of mid-eighteenth-century Dutch printmaking. The clarity of the line work allows for a precise rendering of the subject's features and the textures of his clothing.
As a historical document, this print provides insight into the self-presentation of artists in the Netherlands during the late eighteenth century. The inclusion of the tools of his trade serves to define his professional identity for the viewer. The print is a clean example of the portrait engraving tradition, where the subject is presented with a sense of intellectual and creative authority. The balanced composition and the integration of text into the visual field reflect the conventions of commemorative portraiture from this era.
