This portrait, dated 1628, exemplifies the technical precision characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age. David Bailly, a Leiden-based artist, captures his subject with a focus on material texture and social status. The sitter is depicted in a formal pose, wearing a large, pleated ruff collar that frames her face. The lace trim of the ruff is rendered with fine brushwork, showing the delicate patterns of the fabric against the dark background.
Her attire includes a dark bodice with gold-embroidered panels and a string of pearls draped across her chest. A small, ornate brooch is pinned to her dress, adding a touch of colour to the otherwise sombre palette. The lighting is controlled, directed from the upper left to model the features of the face and the volume of the ruff. This method of illumination creates a sense of presence, drawing the viewer to the subject's direct gaze.
Bailly was known for his ability to balance individual characterisation with the rigid fashion requirements of the seventeenth-century Dutch elite.
