A refined portrait by John Hoppner, featuring a woman in a white gown with blue accents, rendered with the artist's characteristic fluid brushwork.
John Hoppner, a contemporary of Sir Thomas Lawrence, occupied a position of note within the British portrait tradition during the late eighteenth century. This work displays the characteristic fluidity of his brushwork, which often favoured a softer, more atmospheric approach than the rigid formality of his predecessors. The sitter is depicted in a white gown, accented by a blue sash and matching hair ribbon, set against a loosely rendered, dark background that directs attention to the subject's features.
Hoppner was known for his ability to capture a sense of immediacy in his subjects. The application of paint here is relatively free, particularly in the treatment of the fabric and the surrounding space. This technique allows for a sense of movement and lightness, typical of the period's shift towards more relaxed portraiture. The subject's gaze is directed away from the viewer, a common device in portraiture of the era to suggest a contemplative or private moment.
Historical records indicate that the reverse of this canvas contains a study of a child's head, though this is now obscured by the relining process. Such preparatory work was common in the studios of the time, where canvases were often reused or utilised for multiple sketches. This portrait remains a representative example of Hoppner's output, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the British aristocracy and gentry during the 1790s. The composition relies on a balanced arrangement of light and shadow, with the pale tones of the dress providing a contrast to the deeper, muted hues of the background. The work provides insight into the technical methods employed by portraitists of the Royal Academy circle.
