A 1773 portrait by Dmitry Levitzky depicting Alexandra Petrovna Levshina, a student at the Smolny Institute, captured with technical precision and grace.
Dmitry Levitzky, a master of the Russian portrait tradition, painted this work in 1773. It depicts Alexandra Petrovna Levshina, a student at the Smolny Institute for Noble Maidens in Saint Petersburg. The painting belongs to a series of portraits commissioned by Catherine the Great to document the pupils of this educational establishment. Levitzky captures the subject in a pose that suggests a theatrical or dance performance, reflecting the curriculum of the institute which placed great value on the arts.
The composition employs a sophisticated use of light and shadow to define the textures of the subject's costume. The sheer, layered fabric of the skirt contrasts with the structured bodice, demonstrating the artist's technical skill in rendering textiles. Levitzky avoids excessive ornamentation, choosing instead to focus on the natural posture and the refined expression of the sitter. The background, featuring architectural elements such as columns and a decorative urn, provides a sense of depth and formal setting without distracting from the figure.
Levitzky was known for his ability to convey the individual character of his subjects while adhering to the formal requirements of eighteenth-century portraiture. This work is part of the collection held by the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg. It remains a clear example of the artist's contribution to the development of Russian portrait painting during the Enlightenment. The muted colour palette, dominated by soft browns, creams, and subtle pinks, creates a sense of harmony and restraint. This print offers a faithful reproduction of the original oil painting, preserving the tonal nuances and the delicate brushwork that define Levitzky's approach to the human form.
