Description
A realist oil portrait of a young Swiss boy by Albert Anker. The work features a child in a blue smock and brown cap, rendered with a sober and direct observation of character.
Albert Anker was a Swiss painter known for his depictions of nineteenth-century village life. This oil portrait features a young boy in three-quarter view against a dark, neutral background. The subject wears a simple blue smock over a dark waistcoat and a brown woollen cap. Anker captures the soft features of the child with a directness that avoids sentimentality. The blonde hair is rendered with visible brushwork, contrasting with the smooth skin tones of the face. Anker often painted the children of his home village, Ins, in the Canton of Bern. His work is characterised by a sober realism and a focus on the everyday dignity of rural people. In this study, the light source enters from the left, illuminating the boy's forehead and cheek while casting the right side of his face into gentle shadow. The limited palette of blues, browns, and greys focuses attention on the expression of the sitter. The artist studied in Paris under Charles Gleyre but returned to Switzerland to document the social fabric of his community. His portraits of children are noted for their psychological presence. This piece demonstrates his technical skill in handling oil paint to create texture, from the coarse fabric of the cap to the fine strands of hair. It is a representative example of Swiss Realism from the late nineteenth century.
