A refined 1788 woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro from his celebrated series, featuring a grasshopper among flora with accompanying Japanese calligraphy.
Kitagawa Utamaro produced the Ehon mushi erami, or Picture Book of Crawling Creatures, in 1788. This work represents a departure from the typical focus on human figures in Ukiyo-e, shifting the gaze toward the natural world. The print features a delicate arrangement of flora alongside a grasshopper, rendered with the precision characteristic of the Edo period.
The composition balances the organic forms of the plant life with the calligraphic text on the adjacent page. Utamaro employs a restrained palette, allowing the fine line work to define the textures of the leaves and the anatomy of the insect. The inclusion of kyoka, or witty verse, integrates literature with visual art, a common practice in the high-culture circles of the time. This specific page demonstrates the artist's ability to capture the quiet observation of nature, moving away from the theatricality often associated with woodblock prints of the era.
Technically, the print relies on the skill of the carver and printer to maintain the thin, expressive lines of the original drawing. The paper, aged to a warm tone, provides a neutral ground that emphasises the subtle application of colour. Utamaro's approach to the subject is one of scientific curiosity combined with aesthetic refinement. By isolating these small creatures within their botanical environment, he invites the viewer to appreciate the details of the natural world that might otherwise go unnoticed. This print is a fine example of the collaborative nature of Japanese publishing, where the artist, poet, and artisan worked in concert to produce a cohesive volume.
