A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Claude Mellan depicting the classical rescue of Andromeda by Perseus, rendered with precise linear technique.
Claude Mellan, a French engraver and painter active during the seventeenth century, produced this etching during his formative period in Rome. The composition depicts the classical myth of Andromeda, who is chained to a rock as a sacrifice to a sea monster. Perseus is shown arriving on the winged horse Pegasus to rescue her. Mellan demonstrates his technical command of the burin, employing a distinctive system of parallel lines to model form and suggest volume. Unlike many of his contemporaries who relied on cross-hatching to create shadow, Mellan achieved tonal variation through the density and curvature of single lines. This approach gives the figures and the rugged coastal terrain a sculptural quality.
The scene is set against a vast, open sea, with the rocky outcrop providing a dramatic frame for the narrative. Andromeda occupies the foreground, her posture conveying a sense of resignation and anticipation. In the distance, the small figure of Perseus appears in the sky, balanced by the jagged cliffs and the turbulent water below. The print reflects the influence of the Roman school, where Mellan studied under Simon Vouet and absorbed the aesthetic principles of the period. His ability to render light and texture through linear economy is evident in the treatment of the water and the rocky surfaces. This work is a clear example of the precision and clarity that defined Mellan's graphic output, distinguishing his style from the more painterly approaches common in the Baroque era. The print remains a study in the possibilities of the copperplate medium, showing how a limited set of marks can construct a complex, atmospheric narrative.
