A detailed Renaissance engraving by Giulio Sanuto depicting the dramatic rescue of Andromeda by Perseus.
This engraving by Giulio Sanuto depicts the classical myth of Perseus rescuing Andromeda from the sea monster. Sanuto, an Italian printmaker active in Venice, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of sixteenth-century printmaking. The composition follows a clear narrative structure: Andromeda is chained to a rocky outcrop on the left, while Perseus descends from the sky on the right, sword drawn to strike the beast emerging from the water.
The artist employs varied hatching techniques to define the musculature of the figures and the texture of the sea. The background features a detailed cityscape, providing a sense of scale and distance that contrasts with the immediate action in the foreground. The sea monster is rendered with imaginative detail, its scales and open maw adding a sense of peril to the scene. The print reflects the period interest in Ovidian themes, which were frequently adapted by artists to explore human form and dramatic movement.
Sanuto was known for his ability to translate the works of other masters into the medium of engraving. This work displays the influence of Titian and other Venetian painters in its handling of the human figure and the atmospheric treatment of the sky. The lines are controlled and deliberate, creating a balance between the chaotic nature of the struggle and the order of the print medium. The inclusion of the city in the distance serves to ground the mythological event within a recognisable, albeit stylised, architectural setting. This piece offers a view into the technical standards of the Italian Renaissance, where the reproduction of complex narratives required both artistic vision and disciplined manual skill.
