Fra Angelico's 'Penitent St. Jerome' depicts the saint in contemplation, set against a stylised landscape. The painting, executed in tempera on panel, showcases the artist's devout religious style and Early Renaissance artistic conventions.
Fra Angelico's 'Penitent St. Jerome' presents the saint in a state of contemplation and repentance. Jerome, a Doctor of the Church, is depicted in a simple robe, holding a scroll, with a halo above his head. The background features a stylised, somewhat barren, environment with sparse vegetation and rocky formations. The colour palette is dominated by muted tones of gold, brown, and grey, typical of tempera paintings from the Early Renaissance. At the base of the painting, a lion, often associated with St. Jerome, rests peacefully. Other symbolic objects, such as a cardinal's hat, are scattered around the saint's feet, alluding to his renunciation of worldly status. The composition is relatively simple, with a focus on the central figure and the surrounding symbolic elements. Fra Angelico, known for his devout religious paintings, brings a sense of serenity and spiritual depth to this portrayal of St. Jerome. The painting reflects the artistic conventions of the Early Renaissance, characterised by its attention to detail, symbolic representation, and a harmonious balance of colour and form.
