A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu, depicting three figures in patterned robes enjoying a seasonal sake-warming gathering under maple trees.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu depicts a scene of leisure, reinterpreting traditional courtly activities through the lens of contemporary Edo period fashion. The composition features three figures dressed in elaborate, patterned robes, seated beneath a canopy of maple leaves. The figures are engaged in the preparation of sake, with a small iron pot resting over a fire in the foreground. One individual plays a shamisen, while the others attend to the drink and conversation, creating a relaxed atmosphere that contrasts with the formal attire of the subjects.
Masanobu was a significant figure in the development of Ukiyo-e, known for his technical innovations and his ability to blend classical themes with the popular culture of his time. This work is a mitate-e, or parody print, which was a common practice in the eighteenth century. These prints invited viewers to recognise the playful subversion of historical or literary subjects by placing them in modern settings. The use of line work here is precise, defining the folds of the garments and the delicate features of the figures with clarity. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft tones that complement the paper texture, which is characteristic of the benizuri-e style of the period.
The inclusion of the maple leaves provides a seasonal context, suggesting an autumn outing, a popular pastime for the urban population of Edo. The arrangement of the figures is balanced, with the sweeping branch of the maple tree framing the upper portion of the print. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the mid-Edo period, where the appreciation of seasonal beauty and the refinement of social gatherings were central to the cultural life of the city.
