A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu, featuring a contemporary parody of the literary figure Murasaki Shikibu at her writing desk.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu presents a mitate-e, or parody, of the classical literary figure Murasaki Shikibu. The artist reinterprets the traditional iconography of the author of The Tale of Genji, placing her within a contemporary eighteenth-century domestic setting. Masanobu, a significant figure in the development of ukiyo-e, was known for his technical innovations, including the use of perspective and the refinement of the sumizuri-e (ink-printed) style.
The composition employs a clear, linear approach to define the interior space. The figure sits at a low writing desk, her posture relaxed yet attentive as she holds a book. The surrounding architecture, including the shoji screens and the veranda, is rendered with precise, clean lines that create a sense of spatial depth. The artist balances the figure against the geometric patterns of the screens and the decorative motifs on the kimono, which feature floral and circular designs.
Such parodies were popular in the Edo period, allowing artists to comment on classical literature by juxtaposing it with the fashions and habits of their own time. The print demonstrates Masanobu's skill in balancing negative space with detailed pattern work. The calligraphic quality of the lines, particularly in the drapery of the kimono, provides a sense of movement and volume. This work reflects the sophisticated visual culture of the period, where historical references were frequently adapted for a contemporary audience. The print is a fine example of the aesthetic sensibilities prevalent in mid-eighteenth-century Japan, where the fusion of literary tradition and modern style defined the artistic output of the ukiyo-e school.
