An 1795 etching by Johann Christian Reinhart depicting the mythological figure of Pan within a detailed, wooded river scene.
Johann Christian Reinhart, a German artist who spent much of his career in Rome, produced this etching in 1795. The work depicts a quiet, wooded scene where the mythological figure of Pan sits near a stream, playing his pipes. The composition is defined by a dense arrangement of trees and large boulders, which frame the small, solitary figure of the deity. Reinhart uses precise, controlled lines to define the textures of the bark, the foliage, and the rugged stone surfaces.
This print reflects the artist's interest in the classical tradition, where mythological subjects were often placed within natural settings. The etching technique allows for a high degree of detail, particularly in the way light filters through the canopy and reflects off the water. The scene possesses a sense of stillness, typical of the period's approach to idealised nature. Reinhart was known for his ability to balance the structural elements of a scene with the atmospheric qualities of the Italian countryside. By focusing on the interplay between the organic forms of the forest and the static presence of the rocks, the artist creates a balanced, harmonious view. This work demonstrates the technical skill required for etching during the late eighteenth century, showing a mastery of cross-hatching and tonal variation to suggest depth and volume without the use of colour. The inclusion of Pan adds a narrative layer to what might otherwise be a straightforward study of trees and water, connecting the physical environment to the classical past.
