A page from William Morris's edition of *The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam*, combining text, illustration, and botanical decoration in a unified Arts and Crafts design. Edward Burne-Jones provided figure illustrations for the edition.
This illuminated page is from William Morris's edition of *The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam*. Morris, a central figure in the British Arts and Crafts movement, was deeply inspired by medieval manuscripts and the art of illumination. He sought to revive these traditional crafts in response to industrialisation. This particular page combines text, illustration, and decorative elements in a unified design. Edward Burne-Jones provided figure illustrations for the edition. The upper portion of the page features a framed illustration of embracing figures next to a harp, rendered in soft colours. Below, the text of the poem is carefully hand-lettered, interspersed with botanical motifs. Twining vines with leaves and small white flowers frame the text, adding a naturalistic element to the design. The overall effect is one of harmony between word and image, characteristic of the Arts and Crafts aesthetic.
