A serene oil painting depicting the tranquil beauty of Indonesian paddy fields set against a backdrop of distant mountains.
Abdullah Suriosubroto, often cited as the first modern Indonesian painter, produced this work during a period when the Mooi Indië (Beautiful Indies) style dominated the artistic output of the Dutch East Indies. This movement focused on the depiction of the archipelago as an idyllic, serene environment, often prioritising the natural beauty of the terrain over the social realities of the time.
In this composition, the viewer is presented with a quiet, rural scene. The foreground consists of flooded paddy fields, their surfaces acting as mirrors for the sky above. The water reflects the soft, diffused light of a late afternoon or early morning, creating a sense of stillness. Beyond the fields, a dense cluster of trees and vegetation marks the transition to the foothills. The background is dominated by a range of mountains, rendered in atmospheric shades of blue and violet, which recede into the distance. The sky is filled with soft, broken clouds, suggesting a gentle breeze moving across the valley.
Suriosubroto employs a traditional academic approach to perspective and light. His brushwork is controlled, allowing for the subtle gradation of colour necessary to capture the humid, tropical atmosphere of the region. The palette is dominated by earthy browns, deep greens, and cool blues, which work together to create a balanced, harmonious view of the countryside. The presence of small figures working in the fields provides a sense of scale, grounding the vastness of the mountains in the daily life of the region. This work captures a specific vision of the Indonesian environment, reflecting the artist's training in Europe and his subsequent application of those techniques to the geography of his homeland.
