This ink wash painting by Shitao, a prominent figure of the early Qing dynasty, demonstrates the expressive potential of the brush. Shitao, born Zhu Ruoji, was a member of the Ming imperial family who became a Buddhist monk following the fall of the Ming dynasty. His work often rejects the rigid academic conventions of his time, favouring a personal, spontaneous approach to the traditional subjects of the Four Gentlemen: orchids, bamboo, plum blossom, and chrysanthemum.

The composition centres on a large, weathered rock, rendered with textured, dry brush strokes that suggest mass and age. Emerging from behind and around this stone are stalks of bamboo and delicate orchid leaves. The bamboo is depicted with confident, rhythmic strokes, capturing the plant's resilience and flexibility.
