A detailed historical etching by Pieter van den Berge depicting the 1492 Kaas- en Broodvolk uprising in the Netherlands.
This etching by Pieter van den Berge depicts the Kaas- en Broodvolk (Cheese and Bread People) uprising of 1492. The event, a significant peasant revolt in the Kennemerland region of the Netherlands, arose from grievances regarding taxation and the administration of justice under the Habsburg regime. Van den Berge, a Dutch engraver active in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, produced this work as an illustration for a historical text, as evidenced by the page numbering and header visible in the print.
The composition captures a group of armed peasants marching towards a fortified structure. The figures carry rudimentary weapons, including pitchforks and staves, reflecting the nature of the insurrection. A prominent flag is held aloft by the lead figure, serving as a rallying point for the crowd. The background features a simplified architectural rendering of a tower and town walls, providing a sense of place while maintaining the focus on the human subjects. The artist employs clear, precise lines characteristic of the period's book illustration techniques, using hatching to define form and shadow within the figures and the surrounding environment.
Van den Berge's work provides a visual record of a historical narrative that remained relevant to Dutch identity long after the events of the fifteenth century. The print is presented within a rectangular frame, with the title 'T KAAS EN BROODS SPEL' inscribed in a cartouche at the base. This piece offers a glimpse into the methods used by early modern publishers to document and disseminate historical accounts, blending factual reporting with the stylistic conventions of the era. The clarity of the engraving ensures that the narrative elements remain legible, making it a representative example of historical printmaking from the Dutch Republic.
