A detailed lithograph by official war artist Muirhead Bone, depicting the SS Tuscania docked on the River Clyde during the First World War.
Muirhead Bone was appointed as an official war artist during the First World War, a role that allowed him to document the industrial and maritime efforts of the British home front. This lithograph captures the scale of the SS Tuscania, a passenger liner converted for troop transport, docked on the River Clyde in Glasgow. Bone was known for his technical precision and his ability to render the sheer mass of industrial machinery with a sense of quiet observation.
The composition focuses on the contrast between the smaller, traditional sailing vessels in the foreground and the imposing steel hull of the liner. Bone uses a controlled, rhythmic line to define the rigging, the smokestacks, and the rivets along the ship's side. The water is rendered with short, horizontal strokes that suggest movement and reflection, grounding the massive vessel within the busy environment of the Glasgow shipyards.
This work belongs to a series of prints that documented the war effort, specifically the construction and maintenance of naval vessels. Bone avoids romanticising the scene, choosing instead to present a factual account of the maritime industry during a period of national mobilisation. His draughtsmanship is evident in the way he balances the heavy, dark forms of the ship against the lighter, more delicate lines of the masts and ropes. The print provides a clear view of the industrial character of the Clyde, a region that was central to the British naval capacity during the early twentieth century. It remains a document of both the artistic practice of the period and the specific industrial history of Glasgow.
