A serene marine study by Maxime Maufra, capturing the soft light of sunset over the rugged coastline of Belle-Île-en-Mer.
Maxime Maufra, a member of the Pont-Aven School, frequently visited the rugged coast of Brittany. This work captures the atmospheric conditions of Belle-Île-en-Mer, an island off the southern coast of Brittany that attracted many artists during the late nineteenth century. Maufra focuses on the interplay between the setting sun and the expansive sea, using a palette of soft ochres, muted blues, and pale pinks to render the light as it reflects across the water.
The composition is anchored by the dark, jagged rock formations in the foreground, which frame the open horizon. A small boat is visible in the distance, providing a sense of scale against the vastness of the ocean. Maufra employs a technique that balances observation with a subjective interpretation of the atmosphere. His brushwork is deliberate, building up the texture of the clouds and the surface of the water through layered applications of paint. Unlike the more rigid structures of earlier academic marine painting, this piece prioritises the transient qualities of light and the specific mood of the coastal environment.
Throughout his career, Maufra maintained a connection to the natural world, often choosing to paint directly from the motif. His time in Brittany allowed him to explore the dramatic shifts in weather and the unique geological features of the coastline. This particular view demonstrates his ability to capture a quiet, meditative moment at the end of the day. The absence of human activity in the immediate foreground encourages the viewer to focus on the elemental relationship between the sky, the sea, and the land. By avoiding excessive detail, Maufra allows the colour and light to define the space, creating a sense of calm that is characteristic of his mature work.
