A focused academic study of the human form by Henry Herbert La Thangue, displaying precise tonal modelling and a restrained, naturalistic palette.
This study by Henry Herbert La Thangue demonstrates the artist's early engagement with the principles of French Naturalism. Trained at the Royal Academy Schools and later in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme, La Thangue adopted a disciplined approach to the human form. This work focuses on the anatomical precision and tonal modelling characteristic of his academic training, prior to his later shift toward the plein-air rural subjects for which he became known.
The composition is tightly cropped, directing attention to the subject's posture and the play of light across the skin. The artist employs a restrained palette, favouring earthy ochres, umbers, and muted flesh tones. The brushwork is controlled, building form through subtle transitions of light and shadow rather than expressive texture. The figure holds a staff, a common device in academic studies to provide a vertical anchor and to test the artist's ability to render the tension of the arm and shoulder muscles.
La Thangue was a member of the New English Art Club, a group that sought to introduce continental techniques to the British art scene. This piece reflects that period of transition, where the rigour of the studio study met a growing interest in atmospheric light. The background remains indistinct, ensuring the viewer's focus remains entirely on the physical presence of the sitter. The work provides a clear example of the technical proficiency expected of students in the late nineteenth century, balancing anatomical accuracy with a sensitive observation of light. It remains a representative example of the academic exercises that formed the foundation of La Thangue's career, showing his ability to capture volume and weight through oil paint.
