A detailed 17th-century engraving depicting the seasonal activities of November and December, featuring agricultural labour and rural life.
This engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II, after a design by Paul Bril, depicts the final two months of the year within a single composition. The work belongs to a series of the months, a traditional subject in European printmaking that links seasonal agricultural activities with the passage of time.
On the left side, the scene for November focuses on the autumn harvest and preparation for winter. Figures are shown pruning trees and gathering wood, while a group of pigs forage in the foreground, reflecting the traditional time for slaughtering livestock. The composition uses a dense arrangement of gnarled trees to frame the action, creating a sense of enclosure that contrasts with the more open, expansive view on the right.
The right side represents December, characterised by a shift towards colder conditions and the arrival of winter. The sky contains a small zodiac symbol of Capricorn, marking the sun's entry into the sign. The village in the background, set against a hilly horizon, suggests a quiet, rural life. Figures are engaged in various tasks, including tending to goats and moving supplies, while the overall atmosphere conveys the transition into the year's end.
Sadeler's technical skill is evident in the varied line work used to distinguish between the textures of rough bark, animal fur, and the distant stone architecture. The engraving demonstrates the influence of the Flemish tradition of seasonal imagery, where human activity is closely observed and integrated into the natural environment. The print serves as a record of early modern rural life, capturing the rhythm of the seasons through precise, descriptive mark-making. The collaboration between Bril, known for his atmospheric approach to nature, and Sadeler, a master of the burin, results in a balanced composition that manages to convey both the specificities of daily labour and the broader cycle of the calendar year.
