A classic woodblock print from Hiroshige's Tōkaidō series, depicting travellers passing the legendary Night-Weeping Stone at Sayo no Nakayama.

This woodblock print is the twenty-sixth station of the Hoeido edition of The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō. Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the mountain pass at Sayo no Nakayama, a location known for the legend of the Night-Weeping Stone. According to folklore, a pregnant woman was murdered nearby, and her spirit entered the stone, which began to weep at night until her child was saved. Hiroshige frames the composition with two massive, vertical tree trunks on the left and a gnarled pine on the right. These elements create a natural gateway, drawing the eye toward the distant, rolling hills. The foreground features the titular stone, positioned centrally as a quiet, grounded presence amidst the travellers. The figures, rendered in traditional travel attire with conical hats, provide a sense of scale and movement against the stillness of the mountain pass. The colour palette relies on subtle gradations of blue for the sky and distant peaks, contrasted with the earthy tones of the path and the muted greens of the foliage. As a master of the Ukiyo-e genre, Hiroshige utilised the woodblock medium to capture atmospheric conditions and the specific character of Japanese geography. The print demonstrates his ability to balance human activity with the vastness of the natural world. The clear lines and deliberate spatial arrangement reflect the technical precision required for multi-block printing. This work remains a primary example of the travelogue print series, which gained immense popularity during the Edo period.
