New York City I, painted in 1942, represents a departure from the artist's earlier reliance on black grid lines. Upon moving to New York, Mondrian began to incorporate the rhythm and energy of the city into his work. He replaced the traditional black lines with strips of primary colours: red, yellow, and blue. These lines intersect to form a complex, non-hierarchical network that spans the entire canvas. The composition lacks a central focus, allowing the eye to move across the surface without settling on a single point.
