Description

A refined Art Nouveau lithograph by Georges de Feure, featuring a stylish figure in a monochromatic, textured composition.

Georges de Feure was a central figure in the French Art Nouveau movement, known for his contributions to graphic design, theatre, and the decorative arts. This lithograph, created as a New Year's greeting, displays the characteristic aesthetic of the fin-de-siècle period. The composition features a woman in a high-collared coat and elaborate hat, holding a letter, set against a stylised urban backdrop. The use of a monochromatic, textured ink application creates a soft, atmospheric quality that contrasts with the sharp, deliberate lines of the figure's silhouette. De Feure frequently collaborated with journals such as Le Courrier Français and L'Image, where his work often explored themes of femininity and mystery. His approach to graphic design prioritised decorative harmony over strict realism. The lettering for the greeting is integrated into the design, reflecting the period's interest in the unity of text and image. The background elements, including the fence and the distant figure, are rendered with a stippled effect, which adds depth without disrupting the overall flatness of the print. This piece captures the elegance associated with Parisian life at the turn of the century, while demonstrating the artist's ability to balance commercial requirements with a distinct personal style. The muted palette and the focus on a singular, fashionable subject are typical of his graphic output during this era, providing a glimpse into the visual culture of the time.

Artist Biography

Georges de Feure

Georges de Feure, born Georges Joseph van Sluÿters, was a Franco-Dutch artist whose name is now synonymous with the elegant excesses of Art Nouveau and Symbolism. Though less widely celebrated than some of his contemporaries, de Feure's versatility was remarkable. He excelled not only as a painter and illustrator but also as a designer of furniture, theatre sets, and even perfume bottles. This multidisciplinary approach, characteristic of the Art Nouveau ethos, allowed him to create a complete aesthetic world, one that embraced the beauty of the ephemeral and the power of suggestion.

De Feure's artistic journey began in the Netherlands, but it was in Paris that he truly flourished. He became a key figure in the Parisian avant-garde, contributing regularly to journals like *Le Courrier français* and exhibiting at prestigious venues such as the Salon de la Rose + Croix. His illustrations, often featuring ethereal women in flowing gowns, captured the spirit of the age. Yet, unlike some of his peers, de Feure resisted being pigeonholed. His work often explored darker, more psychologically complex themes, hinting at the anxieties lurking beneath the surface of Belle Époque society.

While his paintings and prints are highly sought after, de Feure's legacy extends beyond the canvas. His designs for Siegfried Bing's *Maison de l'Art Nouveau* helped define the movement's aesthetic. His furniture, with its organic forms and sensual curves, exemplifies the Art Nouveau desire to bring art into everyday life. Whether it's a delicate perfume bottle or a striking poster, a Georges de Feure piece embodies the era's fascination with beauty, mystery, and the transformative power of art.
