A detailed engraving of a rhinoceros by Dutch artist Hendrick Hondius (I), based on the iconic 16th-century visual tradition of the species.
This engraving by Hendrick Hondius (I) depicts a rhinoceros, a subject that captured the imagination of European artists for centuries. The composition is derived from the famous woodcut by Albrecht Dürer, which was based on written descriptions and sketches of a rhinoceros sent to Lisbon in 1515. Hondius, a Dutch engraver and publisher, produced this work during a period when exotic animals were subjects of intense curiosity and scientific study.
The print displays the characteristic armour-like plating of the rhinoceros, rendered with precise, controlled lines typical of the engraving technique. The artist uses cross-hatching and varied line weights to suggest the texture of the animal's hide, which appears almost metallic or reptilian in its construction. The inclusion of the Latin inscription 'RHINOCERVS' and the artist's monogram provides a formal, scholarly quality to the image, aligning it with the tradition of early modern natural history documentation.
Unlike later, more anatomically accurate depictions, this work retains the fantastical elements of its source material, such as the small horn on the animal's back and the scale-like patterns covering its legs. These features reflect the limitations of knowledge regarding the species at the time. The print serves as a record of how European artists interpreted reports of distant lands and creatures. It is a clear example of the transmission of visual information through print media, where a single image could be copied, adapted, and circulated across the continent, shaping the public perception of the natural world for generations.
