A 1899 illustration by Andrei Ryabushkin depicting the epic figure Nastassja Mikulichna, rendered in a distinct Russian Revival graphic style.
Andrei Ryabushkin, a painter associated with the Russian Revival movement, created this work in 1899. The composition depicts Nastassja Mikulichna, a figure from the Russian epic tradition known as a bogatyr-maiden. She is shown on horseback, rendered with a focus on the decorative qualities of her attire and the surrounding graphic elements.
Ryabushkin often turned to the history and folklore of pre-Petrine Russia for his subjects. His approach to this illustration is marked by a clear, linear style that draws inspiration from traditional Russian manuscript illumination and folk art. The figure of Nastassja is framed by a geometric border, which reinforces the two-dimensional, graphic nature of the piece. The inclusion of Cyrillic text at the base of the image integrates the narrative directly into the visual field, a technique that aligns with the aesthetic of the period's book design and graphic arts.
In this work, the artist employs a balanced palette, using the red of the subject's garment to create a visual anchor against the muted tones of the horse and the open space. The line quality is deliberate and controlled, defining the forms without relying on heavy shading or atmospheric perspective. This piece reflects Ryabushkin's interest in the stylised representation of historical and mythological themes, moving away from the academic realism that dominated much of the nineteenth-century Russian art scene. The work remains a clear example of how the artist synthesised folk motifs with a modern graphic sensibility, creating a distinct visual language that prioritises pattern and narrative clarity.
