A detailed 1752 etching by Abraham Delfos depicting the mythological figure of Narcissus discovering his reflection in a woodland pool.
This etching by Abraham Delfos, dated 1752, depicts the classical myth of Narcissus. The composition captures the moment the hunter encounters his own reflection in a pool of water. Delfos employs precise hatching techniques to define the musculature of the central figure and the textures of the surrounding woodland. The scene includes traditional iconographic elements, such as the hunting dogs and the presence of Cupid, who observes the scene from the left. In the background, a nymph, likely Echo, appears partially obscured by trees, adding a narrative layer to the encounter.
The print demonstrates the technical skill common in eighteenth-century Dutch printmaking. Delfos, who was active in Leiden, often translated the works of other painters into the medium of etching. The inscription 'J.W. pinx' indicates that this work is based on an original painting by Jan Wandelaar. The interplay of light and shadow across the foliage and the rocky outcrop creates a sense of depth, typical of the period's interest in pastoral and mythological subjects. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical accuracy, while the surrounding environment provides a structured, theatrical setting for the drama of the myth. This work offers a clear example of how classical themes were adapted for the print market during the mid-eighteenth century, appealing to collectors interested in both antiquity and contemporary graphic arts.
