A 1944 portrait by Moïse Kisling, featuring a woman in a blue lace-trimmed dress against a dark, monochromatic background.
Moïse Kisling, a central figure of the School of Paris, painted this portrait of Ms B. Dunn in 1944. The work demonstrates his characteristic approach to portraiture, which often combined a stylised, almost porcelain-like treatment of the human face with a focus on the sitter's psychological presence. Kisling moved to France from Poland in 1910 and became deeply integrated into the Montparnasse art scene, where he developed a distinct aesthetic that balanced traditional academic structure with the modern sensibilities of his contemporaries.
The subject is depicted in a three-quarter view, her arms crossed in a relaxed yet composed posture. She wears a dark blue lace-trimmed garment that harmonises with the deep, monochromatic blue background. Kisling uses a controlled palette, allowing the contrast between the pale, luminous skin tones of the sitter and the surrounding darkness to draw the viewer's attention to her expression. The brushwork is precise, reflecting his training and his preference for clear, defined forms over the looser techniques favoured by some of his peers.
Kisling was known for his ability to capture the likeness of his subjects while imbuing them with a sense of quiet introspection. In this piece, the lack of extraneous detail ensures that the focus remains entirely on the sitter. The texture of the lace and the subtle shading on the arms provide a tactile quality to the painting, demonstrating his technical proficiency. This portrait is representative of his later work, produced during his time in the United States, where he continued to refine his signature style of figurative painting. The composition is balanced and deliberate, avoiding unnecessary ornamentation to maintain a sense of clarity and focus.
