A refined woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu depicting a mother and child pulling a toy cart that references the legendary battle of Yoshitsune and Benkei.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu captures a domestic scene layered with cultural references. The composition features a mother carrying her young son, who pulls a small, wheeled toy cart. The cart itself is a miniature representation of a Sannō Festival float, depicting the legendary confrontation between the warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune and the monk-warrior Benkei on the Gojo Bridge. By incorporating this famous historical narrative into a contemporary toy, Masanobu connects the daily life of the Edo period with the heroic tales of the past.
Technically, this work is an example of urushi-e, or lacquer print. The artist applied hand-coloured pigments to the monochrome ink base, often using a glue-based medium to create a glossy, lacquer-like finish on specific areas of the design. The lines are precise and calligraphic, characteristic of Masanobu’s early eighteenth-century style. The mother’s kimono is decorated with a pattern of pine trees and geometric shapes, demonstrating the artist’s attention to textile design and decorative detail. The figures are rendered with a sense of grace, their forms balanced against the more rigid, architectural structure of the toy cart.
Masanobu was a significant figure in the development of the ukiyo-e genre, known for his innovations in print format and his ability to blend narrative complexity with elegant composition. This print offers a glimpse into the material culture of the era, where festival traditions were integrated into the playthings of children. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the mother and child and the symbolic weight of the toy they pull. It is a clear example of how historical themes were woven into the fabric of urban life in Edo-period Japan, presented here with the clarity and technical control that defined Masanobu’s career.
