A hand-coloured copperplate engraving by Johann Sadeler I, depicting the biblical scene of Moses presenting the Ten Commandments to the people.
This hand-coloured engraving by Johann Sadeler I depicts the biblical narrative of Moses presenting the Ten Commandments to the Israelites. As a prominent member of the Sadeler family of engravers, Johann Sadeler I was active in Antwerp and later Munich, where he produced numerous works based on the designs of contemporary painters. This piece reflects the stylistic conventions of Northern Mannerism, characterised by elongated figures, expressive gestures, and a clear, theatrical arrangement of the scene.
Moses stands centrally, positioned on a rocky outcrop, holding the stone tablets. His posture and the surrounding crowd demonstrate the influence of Italian Renaissance compositions, adapted through the lens of Flemish printmaking. The use of colour, applied by hand to the original monochrome engraving, adds a layer of descriptive detail to the garments and the surrounding terrain. The inclusion of Latin and French text below the image serves to identify the subject matter, referencing the Book of Exodus. The composition balances the verticality of the mountain with the horizontal grouping of the figures, creating a sense of order and narrative clarity.
The print demonstrates the technical precision typical of the Sadeler workshop. The lines are controlled and deliberate, defining the folds of drapery and the textures of the landscape. Such works were often collected in albums or bound volumes, functioning as visual aids for religious instruction and private contemplation. The scene captures a moment of collective response, with the figures in the foreground reacting to the revelation with varied poses of reverence and attention. This print offers a view into the visual culture of the late sixteenth century, where technical skill in engraving met the demand for accessible, narrative-driven religious imagery.
