A striking 1887 oil painting by Mikhail Vrubel, depicting the prophet Moses through the lens of traditional Byzantine iconography.
Mikhail Vrubel painted this depiction of Moses in 1887 during his time in Kyiv. The work reflects his deep engagement with Byzantine art and the restoration of the 12th-century frescoes at the St. Cyril Monastery. Vrubel adopted the formal language of traditional religious icons, yet he infused the figure with a distinct psychological tension characteristic of his broader body of work.
The composition is frontal and austere, placing the prophet against a dark, atmospheric background. A golden halo surrounds his head, providing a stark contrast to the deep, muted tones of his robes and the surrounding space. Moses holds a scroll, his expression conveying a sense of weary authority and internal conflict. The brushwork remains controlled, adhering to the stylistic requirements of icon painting while allowing for the subtle modelling of the face and hands.
This piece demonstrates Vrubel's ability to synthesise historical religious motifs with his own subjective vision. Unlike the rigid, static nature of traditional icons, this figure possesses a palpable sense of humanity. The inclusion of Cyrillic script flanking the figure reinforces the connection to the Orthodox tradition, yet the execution remains firmly within the realm of late 19th-century Symbolist exploration. The work is a study in the intersection of ancient aesthetic forms and the modern artist's search for personal expression within established religious narratives. It remains a clear example of Vrubel's technical versatility and his capacity to reinterpret canonical subjects through a lens of individual introspection.
