A moody, atmospheric seascape by Julius Sergius von Klever, featuring sailing vessels under a soft, moonlit sky.
Julius Sergius von Klever, a painter of the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, is recognised for his atmospheric depictions of the natural world. This work captures a nocturnal maritime scene, where the moon acts as the primary light source, casting a soft, diffused glow across the water and the surrounding clouds. The composition is anchored by the silhouettes of two sailing vessels, which provide a sense of scale against the vast, moody expanse of the sky.
The artist employs a muted palette, relying on subtle variations of ochre, slate grey, and deep brown to convey the stillness of the night. The brushwork is controlled, allowing for the soft blending of the sky and the reflective quality of the water. In the foreground, the rocky shoreline is rendered with darker tones, creating a contrast with the luminous quality of the moonlit horizon. This approach to light and shadow is characteristic of von Klever's output, which often favoured dramatic, quiet moments in nature over busy or narrative-heavy scenes.
This print captures the texture of the original oil painting, including the subtle craquelure and the artist's signature visible in the lower right corner. The work invites quiet observation, focusing on the interplay between the celestial light and the dark, calm sea. It is a representative example of the late nineteenth-century Russian school, where the focus shifted towards capturing the specific mood of a location through careful tonal management.
