A striking black and white woodcut by Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva, capturing the quiet stillness of a moonlit landscape through bold graphic contrast.
Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva was a central figure in the revival of the woodcut technique in early twentieth-century Russian art. Her work often focused on the atmospheric qualities of the natural world, particularly the interplay between light and shadow. This print demonstrates her mastery of the medium, using high-contrast black and white forms to define the scene. The composition relies on the stark opposition of ink and paper. The dark, dense masses of the trees and their reflections in the water are balanced by the lighter, horizontal striations of the sky. By stripping away extraneous detail, the artist directs the viewer to the essential structure of the landscape. The reflection in the water is rendered with simplified, geometric shapes, which suggests the stillness of the night. The horizontal lines in the sky provide a rhythmic texture that contrasts with the organic, irregular shapes of the foliage. Ostroumova-Lebedeva was associated with the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) group, which sought to integrate traditional Russian aesthetics with contemporary European graphic styles. Her prints are noted for their technical precision and their ability to capture a specific mood through minimal means. This piece is an example of her approach to graphic design, where the physical properties of the woodblock dictate the final visual outcome. The artist's monogram is visible in the lower right corner, a common feature in her graphic works. This print offers a quiet, contemplative view of a nocturnal scene, stripped of colour to focus entirely on the relationship between form and light.
