A detailed eighteenth-century engraving depicting the elaborate funerary monument of Johann Adolphus, Duke of Saxe-Weissenfels, showcasing Baroque architectural precision.
This engraving by Johann Martin Bernigeroth depicts the elaborate catafalque and funerary monument constructed for Johann Adolphus, Duke of Saxe-Weissenfels. Created in the mid-eighteenth century, the work captures the theatrical nature of Baroque mourning rituals. The composition is structured within a grand architectural frame, featuring a central obelisk surmounted by a cross, surrounded by allegorical figures and heraldic symbols.
Bernigeroth employs precise line work to render the textures of the draped fabrics, the polished surfaces of the columns, and the sculptural details of the figures. The perspective draws the eye towards the centre of the monument, where the Duke's memory is honoured through a dense arrangement of iconography. The print functions as a record of ephemeral architecture, preserving the appearance of a temporary structure that would have been dismantled following the funeral proceedings.
Every element, from the swags of fabric to the individual coats of arms lining the side pillars, demonstrates the technical skill required for high-quality copperplate engraving during this period. The work provides insight into the visual culture of German princely courts, where death was marked by displays of grandeur and complex symbolic programmes. The monochromatic palette emphasises the structural clarity of the design, allowing the viewer to appreciate the spatial organisation of the funerary installation. This print is a document of both artistic craft and the social history of the eighteenth-century aristocracy.
