A dynamic abstract work by Romanian artist Romul Nutiu, featuring a rhythmic arrangement of organic shapes in shades of blue, black, and orange.
Romul Nutiu was a significant figure in the Romanian post-war art scene, known for his exploration of abstract forms and spatial dynamics. Modular Composition IV displays his characteristic approach to the canvas, where organic shapes and geometric structures interact within a fluid, non-representational space. The work is defined by a series of rounded, cellular forms that appear to drift or collide across the surface, creating a sense of movement that defies a fixed perspective.
The palette is dominated by various shades of blue, ranging from deep navy to bright cyan, which provides a cool, atmospheric foundation. Against this background, Nutiu introduces stark black shapes and occasional bursts of orange, which act as visual anchors. These contrasting elements disrupt the uniformity of the blue field, drawing the eye across the composition in a rhythmic, almost musical fashion. The application of paint is deliberate, with clear boundaries between the forms that suggest a structured, modular logic rather than purely spontaneous gesture.
Nutiu often engaged with the concept of the 'modular' in his work, treating individual shapes as units that could be rearranged or expanded. In this piece, the arrangement suggests an internal architecture, where the interplay of light and shadow within the painted forms creates a shallow depth. The composition avoids traditional centre-focused arrangements, instead spreading its visual weight across the entire frame. This approach invites the viewer to scan the surface, observing the relationships between the individual elements rather than searching for a singular subject. The work remains a clear example of Nutiu's ability to balance controlled design with the expressive potential of abstract painting, offering a visual experience that is both analytical and intuitive.
