A dynamic abstract work by Romul Nutiu, featuring a complex arrangement of rhythmic forms and earth-toned textures.
Romul Nutiu was a significant figure in the Romanian avant-garde, known for his exploration of gestural abstraction and non-figurative forms. Modular Composition III displays the artist's characteristic approach to space and movement, where shapes appear to float or collide within a compressed pictorial field. The work avoids traditional perspective, favouring a dense arrangement of forms that suggest mechanical or biological structures in a state of flux.
The palette is dominated by earth tones, ochres, and deep blacks, which provide a grounding effect for the more fluid, lighter marks scattered across the surface. Nutiu often employed a technique that balanced controlled brushwork with spontaneous, rhythmic application of paint. This creates a sense of kinetic energy, as if the composition is caught in a moment of transformation. The repetition of circular and elliptical motifs throughout the canvas suggests a modular system, where individual elements relate to one another through proximity and visual weight rather than narrative logic.
In this piece, the viewer is invited to navigate a complex network of forms. The lack of a central subject forces the eye to travel across the entire surface, discovering new relationships between the dark, heavy shapes and the lighter, more delicate lines. Nutiu's work from this period reflects a broader interest in the structural possibilities of abstraction, moving away from representational imagery to focus on the physical properties of paint and the psychological impact of form. This print captures the texture and depth of the original oil painting, preserving the subtle variations in tone and the tactile quality of the artist's brushwork. It is a compelling example of mid-century abstract practice, offering a window into the experimental spirit of the era.
