A detailed etching by Andrea Zucchi depicting the dramatic transport of the body of Saint Mark, based on the original painting by Tintoretto.
This print by Andrea Zucchi is a reproduction of the famous painting by Tintoretto, which resides in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice. Zucchi, a skilled Venetian engraver, captures the dramatic tension of the original composition through precise line work and varied tonal shading. The scene depicts the miraculous storm that occurred during the removal of the body of Saint Mark from Alexandria to Venice.
In the foreground, figures struggle against the elements, their bodies contorted in reaction to the sudden tempest. A central group carries the body of the saint, while a camel stands nearby, adding to the exotic setting of the narrative. The background features a grand architectural square, rendered with linear perspective that draws the eye toward the distant buildings. A lightning bolt strikes from the sky, providing a source of illumination that creates sharp contrasts between light and shadow across the figures and the paved ground.
Zucchi employs a range of hatching techniques to define the musculature of the figures and the texture of the drapery. The print serves as a record of Tintoretto's mastery of movement and light, translating the painterly qualities of the original oil work into the medium of printmaking. The inclusion of the Italian inscription at the base provides context for the event, identifying the miracle as the Alexandrians attempt to prevent the transport of the saint's remains. This work demonstrates the technical capability of eighteenth-century printmakers to disseminate large-scale religious paintings to a wider audience, preserving the composition and narrative energy of the Venetian masters for study and collection.
