A detailed 18th-century engraving by Jan Punt depicting the Archangel Michael casting out the rebel angels, based on a composition by Peter Paul Rubens.
This fine art print by Jan Punt depicts the dramatic biblical narrative of the Fall of the Rebel Angels. The composition centres on the Archangel Michael, who descends from the heavens to cast out the forces of darkness. Michael is shown wielding a shield inscribed with the Tetragrammaton, representing divine authority, while his sword arm is raised in a gesture of decisive action. Below him, the fallen angels are rendered with contorted musculature and monstrous features, tumbling into the abyss.
Punt, a Dutch engraver active in the eighteenth century, produced this work after a composition by Peter Paul Rubens. The print captures the dynamic energy and theatricality characteristic of the Baroque period. The use of varied line weights and cross-hatching creates a sense of depth and volume, particularly in the rendering of the figures and the swirling clouds that frame the conflict. The contrast between the celestial light surrounding Michael and the shadows engulfing the fallen figures provides a clear visual hierarchy.
As a reproduction of a Rubens original, this print demonstrates the technical skill required to translate oil painting into the medium of engraving. The attention to anatomical detail and the expressive faces of the figures reflect the influence of the Flemish master. The work is a study in movement and tension, capturing a moment of cosmic upheaval. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the image identifies the subject as the triumph of Saint Michael over the serpent and his followers, as described in the Book of Revelation. This print offers a clear view of the printmaking techniques prevalent in the mid-eighteenth century, where the engraver sought to maintain the painterly qualities of the source material through precise line work and tonal variation.
