A hand-coloured engraving by Maria Sibylla Merian, "Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium" depicts a pepper plant with insects, demonstrating her skill as both a naturalist and an artist.
Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) was a German-Swiss naturalist, scientific illustrator, and entomologist. She was one of the first naturalists to observe insects directly. Merian's meticulous observations and documentation of insect metamorphosis made a significant contribution to entomology. Her detailed illustrations, based on her field observations, were published in several books, including "Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium". This print from "Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium" depicts a pepper plant with various peppers in different stages of ripeness. A caterpillar crawls along a leaf at the bottom left, while a moth rests on a leaf at the upper right. The plant is rendered with careful attention to detail, from the veining of the leaves to the texture of the peppers. The insects are also depicted with precision, capturing their forms and colours. The composition is both scientific and artistic, reflecting Merian's dual interests.
