A haunting Symbolist illustration by Sergey Solomko, depicting an ethereal encounter between an elderly man and a spectral figure in a forest.
Sergey Solomko was a Russian artist known for his contributions to book illustration and postcard design during the early twentieth century. This work, titled Memory, reflects the stylistic tendencies of the period, combining elements of Symbolism with the decorative sensibilities of Art Nouveau. The composition features an elderly man seated in a forest setting, confronted by a translucent, ethereal figure who appears as a spectral presence.
The contrast between the solid, heavily patterned garments of the man and the diaphanous, near-transparent quality of the female figure creates a narrative tension. Solomko employs a muted colour palette, allowing the soft glow of the moon or sun in the background to provide a focal point for the scene. The verticality of the pine trees frames the interaction, drawing the eye toward the central exchange between the two figures.
Solomko spent much of his career in Paris, where he produced numerous works for the publishing house Lapina. His illustrations often drew upon Russian folklore, historical themes, and romanticised narratives. This particular piece demonstrates his ability to render texture, from the intricate embroidery on the man's coat to the delicate, wispy rendering of the ghostly apparition. The work is characteristic of the era's fascination with the supernatural and the psychological weight of recollection. It avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the atmospheric quality of the encounter. The print captures the fine details of the original watercolour, preserving the subtle washes and ink lines that define the figures and their surroundings.
