A moody, symbolic depiction of an imagined ancient city under a glowing moon, inspired by the architectural style of the Italian Renaissance.
Konstantin Bogaevsky, a painter associated with the Crimean school, often looked toward the Italian Renaissance for inspiration. In this work, he constructs an imagined city that echoes the architectural precision and gravity found in the paintings of Andrea Mantegna. The composition is dominated by a heavy, swirling sky, where a pale moon casts a circular glow over the stone structures below.
Bogaevsky employs a muted palette of ochre, grey, and deep brown to suggest the weight of history. The city walls appear as if carved from the earth itself, reflecting a preoccupation with ancient, timeless forms rather than contemporary reality. The water in the foreground acts as a dark mirror, doubling the architectural mass and grounding the ethereal atmosphere of the upper register.
This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to synthesise classical influences with a personal, dreamlike vision. The rigid, block-like buildings contrast with the fluid, circular motion of the clouds, creating a tension between the static nature of stone and the movement of the heavens. Bogaevsky avoids literal representation, opting instead for a stylised interpretation of a historical epoch. His work often features these desolate, monumental cities, which seem to exist outside of any specific time or place. By referencing Mantegna, the artist invites the viewer to consider the continuity of artistic tradition and the way historical styles can be reinterpreted through a modern, symbolic lens. The result is a quiet, contemplative image that prioritises mood and structural harmony over narrative detail.
