A nineteenth-century lithographic advertisement by Charles-Émile Jacque promoting the serialised publication of the Mémorial de Sainte-Hélène.
This lithographic advertisement for the Mémorial de Sainte-Hélène provides a window into the mid-nineteenth-century French publishing industry. Charles-Émile Jacque, a figure known for his contributions to the Barbizon school and his mastery of etching, produced this promotional sheet to announce the serialised publication of the memoirs of Emmanuel de Las Cases. The work documents the final years of Napoleon Bonaparte on the island of Saint Helena.
The composition follows the conventions of nineteenth-century book advertising. It frames the central text with vignettes depicting Napoleonic iconography, including soldiers, horses, and military regalia. An eagle, the symbol of the French Empire, sits at the apex of the design. The artist employs a delicate, linear style typical of lithographic printing from the period, allowing for the inclusion of fine details in the uniforms and the surrounding foliage. The layout balances typography with illustrative elements, ensuring that the publisher, Ernest Bourdin, and the primary illustrator, Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet, receive clear visibility.
Jacque demonstrates his technical proficiency in the handling of light and shadow within the small scenes. The work functions as both a commercial tool and a piece of historical ephemera. It captures the public fascination with Napoleonic history that persisted in France decades after the Emperor's death. The inclusion of specific details, such as the publication schedule and the involvement of other artists like Horace Vernet and Auguste Raffet, reflects the collaborative nature of large-scale illustrated projects during this era. This print offers an authentic look at the marketing strategies employed to reach a broad readership in the 1840s, combining literary prestige with visual storytelling.
