A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Jan van de Velde II, depicting a serene rural scene for the month of May.
This etching, titled May (Maius), forms part of a series depicting the twelve months of the year. Jan van de Velde II, a master of the Dutch Golden Age, employs a sophisticated combination of etching and engraving to capture the atmosphere of early summer. The composition presents a rural scene, featuring a fortified manor house positioned near a calm body of water. Figures in period attire gather in the foreground, while small boats navigate the stream, suggesting a leisurely pace of life associated with the season.
The artist demonstrates technical precision in the rendering of foliage and architectural textures. The heavy, gnarled tree on the left provides a framing device that draws the eye toward the central structure. Van de Velde uses varied line weights to create depth, from the fine hatching in the sky to the bolder strokes defining the foreground vegetation. The inclusion of the zodiac symbol for Gemini at the top centre, along with the Latin inscription at the base, aligns the work with traditional allegorical representations of the calendar.
Van de Velde was known for his contributions to the development of the Dutch printmaking tradition. His work often reflects the interest in local topography and daily life that defined the period. This print provides a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the seventeenth-century Netherlands, where the observation of nature and the structure of the seasons were common themes for artists and collectors alike. The balance between the human figures and the surrounding environment creates a sense of harmony, typical of the period's approach to rural subjects. This fine art print captures the original detail and tonal range of the copperplate, offering a clear view of the artist's mark-making and compositional strategy.
