Description

A classic monochrome woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu I, depicting the figure of Matsukaze from his early eighteenth-century Album of Courtesans.

This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu I depicts the figure of Matsukaze, a character drawn from the Keisei ehon, or Album of Courtesans. Kiyonobu I was a founder of the Torii school, which maintained a close association with the kabuki theatre in Edo. His work is defined by the use of bold, sweeping lines that capture the movement and posture of his subjects. This specific print exemplifies the early style of Ukiyo-e, where the focus remains on the graphic quality of the ink rather than complex colouration.

The figure is presented in profile, wearing a kimono decorated with a repeating cloud motif. The composition is sparse, allowing the viewer to focus on the silhouette and the calligraphic weight of the lines. The artist employs a technique known as tan-e, where the print is presented in monochrome, relying on the contrast between the dark ink and the paper tone. In the upper right corner, a circular crest featuring a pine tree provides a visual anchor, while the name Matsukaze is written in elegant script to the right of the figure.

Torii Kiyonobu I was instrumental in developing the aesthetic of the floating world. His prints often served as promotional material for actors and courtesans, capturing their likenesses with a sense of theatricality. The simplicity of this piece reflects the technical limitations and artistic choices of the early eighteenth century. By stripping away unnecessary detail, the artist directs attention to the posture and the rhythmic pattern of the garment. This print is a representative example of the early Edo period aesthetic, where the graphic power of the woodblock medium was first being explored to its full potential.
