A formal seventeenth-century portrait of Marie de' Medici by Dutch engraver Salomon Savery, featuring the Queen Mother with royal symbols and allegorical putti.
This portrait of Marie de' Medici, executed by the Dutch printmaker Salomon Savery, captures the Queen Mother of France during her period of exile in the Netherlands. The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century royal portraiture, placing the subject in a formal interior setting defined by heavy drapery and symbolic accessories. Marie de' Medici is depicted seated, wearing a dark gown with a wide lace collar, holding a rosary in her hand. Beside her, a crown rests upon a cushion, signalling her royal status despite her political displacement.
Savery employs a precise etching and engraving technique to render the textures of the fabric, the lace, and the surrounding environment. The background features a textile wall covering adorned with fleur-de-lis motifs, reinforcing the French royal connection. Above the subject, three putti hover, holding floral garlands, a common allegorical device used to introduce a sense of divine favour or classical allusion to the scene. The Latin inscription at the base of the print provides a formal identification and commentary on her status, typical of the commemorative prints produced during this era.
As a Dutch artist, Savery was part of a tradition that excelled in the production of high-quality prints for a growing market of collectors and scholars. This work functions as a historical record of the Queen's presence in Amsterdam, where she sought refuge after her fall from power in France. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the period, balancing the realistic depiction of the sitter with the symbolic requirements of aristocratic portraiture. The use of light and shadow creates a sense of volume within the figure, while the linear quality of the engraving defines the contours of the drapery and the architectural elements of the room.
