An intricate seventeenth-century engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II depicting the seasonal agricultural activities of March, complete with zodiacal symbolism.
This engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II, titled Martius, forms part of a series depicting the months of the year. Sadeler, a member of a prominent family of engravers, was active in Prague at the court of Emperor Rudolf II. His work reflects the technical precision and narrative density characteristic of Northern Mannerist printmaking.
The composition is divided into distinct zones. In the foreground, figures engage in agricultural labour, specifically the pruning and preparation of vines, which aligns with the seasonal activities associated with March. The middle ground features a terrace with formal garden elements, while the background opens into a sprawling river valley with a town. The inclusion of the Aries zodiac symbol in the sky provides a celestial anchor for the temporal theme.
Sadeler employs a variety of hatching techniques to define form and texture, from the rough bark of the foreground tree to the smooth surface of the water. The perspective is expansive, drawing the eye from the immediate tasks of the workers toward the distant hills. The Latin inscription at the base provides a classical context for the seasonal cycle, linking the physical act of gardening to the broader rhythms of the natural world. This print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance detailed observation with the structured, often complex, compositions favoured by the late Renaissance and Mannerist traditions. The work functions as both a record of seasonal life and a sophisticated decorative object, typical of the high-quality prints produced in the early seventeenth century for a learned audience.
