Lucebert, born Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk, was a central figure in the Dutch post-war avant-garde. Associated with the CoBrA movement, his work often rejects traditional aesthetics in favour of raw, spontaneous expression. This piece, titled Mannenkop (Man's Head), dates from 1971 and demonstrates his characteristic approach to portraiture.

The composition is defined by bold, calligraphic ink lines that construct a distorted, mask-like visage. Lucebert employs a stark contrast between the fluid, sweeping strokes of the brush and the more rigid, graphic outlines of the facial features. The figure appears flattened against the paper, with minimal concern for anatomical accuracy or spatial depth. Instead, the artist focuses on the immediate, visceral impact of the form.

The ink application varies in density, with areas of deep, saturated black providing weight to the figure, while thinner washes suggest shadow and texture.
