A fine art print of Andrea del Sarto's 1525 fresco, depicting the Virgin Mary and Child with Saint Joseph in a balanced, High Renaissance composition.
The Madonna del Sacco is a fresco painted by Andrea del Sarto in 1525 for the cloister of the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata in Florence. The work depicts the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child, while Saint Joseph rests his arm upon a sack, from which the painting derives its name. The composition is contained within a lunette, a shape that dictates the arrangement of the figures and the architectural elements behind them.
Andrea del Sarto demonstrates his mastery of colour and light through the soft, atmospheric transitions across the figures. The palette is muted, relying on earthy tones and subtle gradations to create a sense of volume and weight. The figures occupy a shallow space, yet the artist achieves a naturalistic presence through the careful modelling of drapery and the gentle interaction between the mother and child. Saint Joseph is positioned to the left, his posture relaxed as he leans against the sack, providing a domestic quality to the scene that departs from more formal religious depictions of the period.
The fresco is noted for its technical execution, particularly the way the artist adapted the figures to the curved boundary of the lunette. The light appears to emanate from within the scene, casting soft shadows that define the forms without harsh outlines. This approach to painting, often associated with the Florentine school, prioritises harmony and balance. The work remains a primary example of del Sarto's contribution to the High Renaissance, reflecting his ability to combine classical structure with a refined, painterly sensibility. The original fresco has undergone various restorations over the centuries, yet the composition retains the clarity and grace characteristic of the artist's mature style.
